A leading global supplier of fineblanking, forming and electro sheet metal stamping products, and renowned for over 60-years for its precision and innovation, was looking for a solution to optimise its quality assurance processes. The company provides a broad range of end-to-end services from tool development and production through to assembly. It operates in many sectors such as the automotive and renewable energy industries as well as in industrial applications.

A production site in Germany specialises in making radially symmetrical precision parts of the highest quality. These components require extremely high quality assurance standards. To meet these standards while also increasing efficiency, the company worked closely with Hexagon. The aim was to implement a software solution to visualise quality-assurance data in an intuitive and user-friendly way, enabling instant checking and seamless integration into existing ERP systems.

Task:
Implementing an automated and scalable solution to meet the highest  quality assurance standards

A Hexagon coordinate measuring machine/CMM was already in use at the production site, but its existing DataPage+ visualisation software had been discontinued. Consequently, a solution was sought that would not just replace the existing solution, but also meet the increasing demands for precision and efficiency in quality assurance.

The visualisation options in the existing solution were limited, making it difficult to clearly display quality-assurance data. Visually distinguishing measuring points on small, radially symmetrical components was especially difficult for operators. Efficiency was therefore reduced while the potential for precision errors increased. Furthermore, the data required manual checking meaning lots of extra input and clicks, which slowed the work process considerably.

Consequently, a key feature of the new solution needed to be the fully automated monitoring of the inline measurement data in 3D. The new solution also needed to enable direct and clear visualisation of component quality and eliminate the need for manual intervention. Data from the new system also had to feed seamlessly into the existing ERP system. Moreover, the company wanted a scalable software solution that could adapt to future requirements and be used across multiple sites.

Project implementation:
From pilot phase to fully customised solution

The customer initially opted for the newly launched eMMA Fusion Essentials version, which was specially developed for companies to achieve easy implementation of the system. It requires no complex database structure and enables quick installation and uncomplicated local use.

eMMA Fusion Essentials was selected to firstly test the new functions on a smaller scale. This pilot phase would enable the company to evaluate the main benefits of the software and check whether it could meet the requirements for inline quality monitoring. The test quickly revealed that the solution not only met the requirements, but also provided added opportunities for optimisation.

Such positive experiences led the production site to upgrade to eMMA Fusion Professional. This extended solution provides, among other things, a central database enabling cross-location analyses. Special modifications were made during implementation, including visualisation of measuring points along outer contours and automatic scene switching, to further enhance user-friendliness. This two-stage approach ensured smooth implementation of the system and optimal customisation to meet specific needs.

The software enables centralised management and analysis of quality-assurance data and is manufacturer-independent, so it can easily integrate data from different measurement systems. To meet the customer's specific needs, Hexagon worked closely with the customer to develop customised modifications to the software.

Visualisation along outer contours: eMMA Fusion Professional displays measuring points along the outer contours rather than in middle points. A much better overview is then provided and precise analysis is possible, especially for small, radially symmetrical components such as those produced at the production site.

The software automatically switches between predefined scenes, so that operators can see all the relevant information on the screen, clearly laid out and without manual intervention. This function supports seamless, real-time quality monitoring.
