Creating situational awareness for space missions
OHB's proof of concept demonstrates how to plan, control and visualize an offshore rocket launch

The challenge
The global commercialization of space, often referred to as New Space, has increased the demand for alternative launch facilities in countries without their own space centers. Floating spaceports in the sea equipped with micro launchers are an option, but to ensure the safety of such operations, tools are needed to guarantee that no stakeholders in the launch area are affected.
Hexagon partner GEOSYSTEMS GmbH developed a customized 4D real-time application for critical missions as an internal proof of concept. This application covers all phases of a rocket launch mission: the planning phase, mission control during the launch and post-mission analysis.
The solution
The GEOSYSTEMS solution was developed using Hexagon's Luciad technology to integrate and review data from various sources, identify launch areas via simulation, manage activities and analyze post-launch scenarios. Luciad technology provided real-time location intelligence, situational awareness and connections to multiple databases via its SDK, which includes real-time data aligned with domain-specific standards.
The high performance of LuciadRIA, coupled with the efficient and agile implementation by GEOSYSTEMS, facilitated seamless integration of all data relevant for a safe operation. The internal proof of concept was completed in June 2024, and the next step is to commence operations after considering all political and legal aspects.
